In the July/August
Art on Paper magazine features "Diaries of a Young Artist."
Katy Grannan participated and submitted text that was very interesting. One part of her Dear Diary entry really touched me and related to my Drawing for ARDS project.
She writes: " I am anxious to get back to the best part. WORK. Part of me wants to know what with these new pictures. (No, I don't really want to know what will happen. Then why bother?)
I need to repeat a mantra or something. Trust your instincts & work. Dare to FAIL.
Being out there, navigating through the uncertainty and surprise is the best part. I live for those unusual experiences and revelations that only exist because I'm making photographs. Uncertainty is essential. Preconceived plans are only a starting point; "plans" or "ideas" always change and end up somewhere I never could have imagined."
I really relate to these thoughts. I work very similarly. I always start with an idea or plan and then let the process take me wherever it needs to go. I am always surprised with the results in my work. Sometimes disappointed and other times thrilled with where the process has taken me.
