Donate for ARDS research and receive an original drawing

In March, at the age of thirty, I found myself suddenly ill and on a ventilator fighting for my life for 18 days. I was in the hospital for 21 days, but thankfully I survived. It has been a long and emotional recovery that continues everyday.
I have decided to join the ARDS Foundation team and raise morny for ARDS research. For every donation that is made over $120, I will give the donor an original drawing created specifically for them.
$100 dollars will go towards the ARDS Foundation and $20 will be used for materials and shipping costs.

These drawings will be done on 100% cotton rag paper with pen, pencil, and ink. Send me three words when you make your donation and those words will inspire the creation of your drawing. After donating email me at with three words that I will use to inspire a drawing as a thank you gift.

If you would like to read more about my journey through ARDS visit my website.

Brenda

Her words were: happiness, book, sunset
Materials used: pen, ink, graphite, watercolor pencils
The companion piece to this drawing is under construction (starting over) because it was not turning out how I had hoped.

Andrea

materials used: ink, graphite, pen
This is a self portrait of sorts.

Dwight

Dwight's words were: wild, happy, and young.
Materials used: graphite, watercolor pencils, and pen
This was my second attempt at a drawing for Dwight, the first was a giant disaster. I knew that I wanted to draw a mule deer for Dwight, even though that is not what he specifically asked for. I like the way that it turned out, the deer looks like some sort of God of the wild.
I may work on it a little more, but it is done for now. I don't want to overwork it.

Marilyn

Marilyn's words were: song, family, joy
Materials used: graphite, watercolor pencil, ink, pen
I decided to draw the weaver bird because they make such intricate, beautiful nests. Those carefully crafted nests seemed to represent home and family, and the birds were for song.

These recent drawings are not specifically for donors, although they will be for sale at Deep Breath. I plan on working on more drawings for my donors. I hope to have a few more of those finished this coming week. This past weekend I followed my instincts and let the drawings
take me where they needed to go.
Not knowing what the drawing will be or how it will turn out is liberating and interesting. These types of "drawing experiments" inform my more controlled and planned drawings.

This drawing was begun earlier in my fundraising process. I didn't feel it was done. I worked on it a little more today, adding the mushrooms. They seem to make it a more mystical and dream like similar to my healing process.
You can see the original drawing here.

This drawing is very special to me because it was done for my new friend Margaret who has survived Acute Respiratory Syndrome TWICE! She definitely has angels watching over her.

It is not too late to donate.

I have been getting a lot of questions and emails asking me if it is too late to donate for my fundraising efforts. It is never too late to donate for ARDS research. I have a lot of drawings to complete, but I am ready and willing to create as many as I can to spread the word about this terrible illness and to raise awareness and money for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

The support I have received thus far has blown me away! My original fundraising goal was $250, and I have now raised close to $1,500. I am very passionate about this project and will work hard to get many drawings done in time for the show opening. However, I can continue to add drawings to the exhibition after the opening and the display will continue to grow.

I feel grateful and blessed for all of the support I had while ill. Also for the donors that have made this fundraising project a success. It has been a healing project for me to be able to give back to people while they donate to ARDS research in my behalf.
THANK YOU!

This is another drawing that is inspired by my hallucinations while I was sick.

Dave

materials used: graphite, pen, ink
A number of these drawings are based on some of the hallucinations I had while in the hospital with ARDS.

Julie

materials used: pencil, ink, pen
I have been working on a lot of drawings that will be for sale at the gallery. I have a few close to being finished and then I will get back to the drawings for the donors. It is more difficult for me to do drawings inspired by three words, although I like the challenge.

Dan all over again

Dan in progress

Dan's words were: Red, winter, and Pahoehoe
Materials used: graphite

I did not know what pahoehoe was, but I looked it up and it is lava that has a smooth, billowy, undulating, or ropey surface. These surface features are due to the movement of very fluid lava under a congealing surface crust. Dan has spent some time in Hawaii, so I am sure that is where this word is coming from. I have become very interested in the images of lava and have loved drawing this piece.
I may have to do another one for Dan that includes more of his words, as a companion to this drawing.

Deep Breath: Drawings to Benefit Lung Health

Deep Breath is the name of my upcoming fundraising show at the Anton Art Center. Today I took some photos from the set I created right after returning home from my stay at the hospital for ARDS. The set and the characters are inspired my some of the nightmares I had while in and out of my coma. I am hoping to include some work similar to these in the show.
